I recently wrote a post about the noise we allow into our work lives and the chaos we ourselves might be creating.
Here is a working example of authenticity. Authentically, I am a scorched earth personality. This isn’t a great trait to have, especially as a collaborative partner or consultant. I had to grow up. The tortured artist needs to eat and pay a few bills so once the drama (and smoke clears) I seek out the counsel of a calmer and wiser friend that I have known since child hood. Ironically, or is it coincidentally, her super power is perspective so I am in luck.
Nobody wants authentic Bonny. What you might want is consistent Bonny.
I suggest you listen to the entire video but at the very least queue up to around the 42:00 minute mark to hear Seth masterfully explain. In a nutshell, your audience doesn’t want you to be authentic, they want you to be the best version of yourself.
The actual video is better than this sensationalized graphic for the video. In fact, I had to open the video again and check because this visual vibe is not what the video is about. What it is might be described as an albeit successful YouTuber using the cringe worthy tactics that optimize self promotion, clicks, and views.
Recently I have noticed videos where influencers are grabbing their laptops and showing you how quickly they can make a Descript video. ‘Look at me in an airport loyalty lounge pounding out a social media post in 30 minutes before my flight’.
Well also not me. Yes it is not a laborious process but when has speed been an asset to building anything — unless we are talking slingshots while being stalked by a mountain lion.
How did I make that?
Click on the image to download Descript. Their free version is the perfect introduction on how to make video an important part of your workflow.
I have been using Descript for years and FYI, when I am in the loyalty lounge I spend my time scarfing down “free” food and drinks. Or once one of the loyalty agents printed a two-sided 25 page document that I needed to read for preparation for a talk on the other side of the flight.
Something newish that has evolved in Descript is the ability for my voice from the video to seamlessly correct parts of the transcript where my voice was not recorded clearly. I will admit these instances today were user generated not the fault of the premium recording technology. I had music playing in my office and also ducking selected. No problem. I highlighted the area where I needed to record my voice and it was easily replaced.
I don’t need the transcript this time and you can see a few missed spots of dialogue in the transcript. This is a powerful tool allowing both edits in the text (reflected in video) or below in the actual audio.
This is the book I mentioned in the video…
